What happens after I make a claim of abuse to the Methodist Church?

An independent coordinator can help you with the claims process if you want

When the Methodist Church receives your claim, they will assign an independent coordinator. This person can meet with you and help you with the claims process if you want.

For example, they can check there is enough information for the investigation of your claim.

You can choose not to use the coordinator and take your claim directly to the Review Panel instead.

Making a claim can bring up a range of emotions. It can help to find support to help you during this process.

The Review Panel will investigate your claim

The Review Panel is a team of three people, one person is from the Church and the other two people are independent.

You can meet the Review Panel at a time and place that suits you, and you can bring a support person and/or your legal representative with you to the meeting.

They will look into your claim and decide whether to accept your claim.

The independent coordinator will let you know what the decision is

The independent coordinator will let you know the Review Panel’s decision. You will also receive the decision in writing, along with information about how to appeal it.

If the review panel accepts your claim, they will decide what form of redress to offer you. The redress offered will be decided in discussion with you.
