Who can make a claim of abuse or neglect to Oranga Tamariki?

You can make a claim to Oranga Tamariki if 

• you were harmed by abuse or neglect while Oranga Tamariki was responsible for your care, and  
• the abuse or neglect happened after 1 April 2017 (the date Oranga Tamariki was established.)

You can be under 18, or older. You can be still in care or no longer in care. 

If abuse happened before 1 April 2017, you can make a claim to the Ministry of Social Development

If abuse or neglect happened before 1 April 2017, you can make a claim to the Ministry of Social Development (MSD) Historic Claims team. 

You can also make a claim to the MSD Historic Claims team if abuse happened when you were in the care of a previous child protection agency such as:

• Child Youth and Family Services
• Department of Social Welfare or 
• the Child Welfare Division of the Education Department.
