What records does the Diocese of Nelson hold?

The Diocese of Nelson holds records about:

• St Andrew’s Home (also known as St Andrews Orphanage and St Andrews Family Home). Records they hold include:
  • minutes
  • registers
• Whakarewa Orphanage (also known as Whakarewa Trust School and Whakarewa Home). Records they hold include:
  • trust board records mostly from the 1800s
  • school and home rolls 1887 – 1940
  • admittance dates and names 1949 – 1970's
  • files of residents 1950’s - 1960’s.

How do I apply for records held by the Diocese of Nelson?

They will let you know if they need any information or documents (for example, proof of identity) from you. They may also let you know what format you will receive copies of records in.

They need to respond to your request within 20 working days

Under the Privacy Act the Diocesan Archivist needs to respond to your request within 20 working days. If they need more time to complete your request they need to tell you why and how much longer it will take them.
