Corrections needs to respond to your request within 20 working days

The Department of Corrections (Corrections) need to respond to your request within 20 working days, under the Privacy Act 2020.

If they cannot send you a copy of all your requested records within 20 working days, they need to tell you:

  • why they could not complete your request in 20 days and
  • when you can expect a copy of your records.

If you are unhappy with the reason Corrections gave for why they need longer for your request, you can ask the Privacy Commissioner to review Corrections’ decision.

If there are a lot of records, Corrections may send you copies of records in batches

If your request involves a large number of records, you may receive copies of these in batches, usually each month.

Corrections should tell you if they need to send you records in batches. You can tell Corrections if your request is urgent, or you want specific records sent to you sooner than others.

You can ask for your records request to be completed urgently

If you need your request completed urgently, let Corrections know and they may be able to speed up their process.

Corrections might be able to give you some of your records faster and provide the rest to you later.
