How do I make a complaint about Oranga Tamariki?

You can make a complaint by contacting Customer Information Requests

Making a complaint can bring up a range of emotions. We have some suggestions for where you can find support to help you during this process. You can make a complaint to Customer Information Requests by:

Or, you can have a support person make a complaint on your behalf.

The types of issues you could complain about include: 

  • Oranga Tamariki not contacting you in the way you prefer, even though you told them how you want them to contact you
  • you have not heard from Oranga Tamariki 20 working days after you requested your records
  • your copy of the records seems to have the wrong information redacted (learn about redacted information). 

You can also make a complaint to the Privacy Commissioner or the Ombudsman

The Privacy Commissioner and Ombudsman may only investigate complaints if you have already tried making a complaint to Oranga Tamariki. The Privacy Commissioner 

The Privacy Commissioner manages complaints about your rights to access and correct your personal information.

 
For example, you can complain to the Privacy Commissioner if you are unhappy with Oranga Tamariki's response to your complaint about redacting the wrong information from your copy of records about you.

The Office of the Ombudsman 

The Ombudsman deals with complaints about government agencies.  For example, you could complaint to the Ombudsman if you are unhappy with the Oranga Tamariki’s response to your complaint about: 

  • them continuing to call your phone number, after you asked them to email you instead
  • not providing you with the information you requested
  • their decision not to give you access to records about whānau.
